How do we address period poverty in Uganda?
Purchasing AFRIpads
By purchasing reusable pad kits from AFRIpads, we support Ugandan menstruators who are pursuing their education as well as the local economy. After we place an order with AFRIpads, Sylvia picks up and distributes them throughout the community of Kirinda, Uganda.
Donating water catchment tanks
Clean water is crucial for safely managing menstruation, as it allows menstruators to wash reusable period products and maintain their personal hygiene. Without clean water, menstruators are forced to manage their cycles in unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
Access to clean water is a huge issue in drought-ridden Uganda. Students often have no consistent access at home or school. Families are forced to hike to the local borehole each day, hoping that water is available.
Since 2018, Sylvia’s Sisters has donated nearly a dozen water tanks to Ugandan schools and community centers. These large water tanks are connected to a system of gutters that collect water during the rainy season for use year-round.
Providing monetary support for educational seminars
We support Sylvia in her efforts to teach young women and other community leaders about the importance of menstrual health, clean water, sanitation, and activism.
Where does Sylvia’s Sisters work in Uganda?
We are based in the rural village of Kirinda, Uganda, near the capital of Kampala, where Sylvia lives. We work exclusively through Sylvia, who can ensure the work we’re doing is necessary, thoughtful and sustainable. At this moment, we are not taking on additional missions in Uganda.
Who is Sylvia?
Sylvia Namukasa is an activist, environmentalist and changemaker in rural Uganda. She is our namesake and essential to our efforts to end period poverty in Kirinda. It is through Sylvia that our founder learned about the many ramifications of period poverty, and it’s because of Sylvia that we exist at all. Read more about our founding story.
